UTorrent is a free-to-download BitTorrent client, capable of opening .torrent files. Torrent files allow users to connect to one another and simultaneously download and upload data from multiple users at the same time. After downloads are complete, users become "seeds" that other people can download from until they elect to cancel seeding or shut down the torrent client.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the uTorrent website (see Resources below). Click the big "Get uTorrent" button to start the download.

  2. Step 2

Double-click the install file you downloaded to install uTorrent on your hard drive. During the install process, choose to make it a desktop icon.

  3. Step 3

Double-click on the uTorrent desktop icon to run the program.

  4. Step 4

Download a torrent file to your computer, then drag the file into the open the uTorrent window. Alternatively, you can right-click on the torrent file and select "uTorrent" under "Open With."

  5. Step 5

Click on the torrent file as it is downloading to bring up detailed information about the torrent. You will be able to monitor download speed, upload speed, the number of seeds and peers and other important information about the torrent download. You can pause, stop or remove the torrent using the icons toward the top of the program window. If you have several torrents downloading at once, you can use the blue arrow buttons to move the files up or down the list to change the download order.

  6. Step 6

Modify bandwidth settings. UTorrent runs fastest when the bandwidth settings are properly set to match your Internet connection. Click "Options" > "Preferences" and then the "Bandwidth" tab, and change your global upload rate and download rate to reflect the speed of your connection. If you choose an upload speed that is too low, the program will limit your download speed.

  7. Step 7

Remove finished torrents. When torrents are done downloading, they will list as 100 percent complete and begin "seeding" (uploading to other users, while not downloading). Select the finished torrent and press the red "X" icon to remove it. Seeding will likely reduce the speed of your other downloads.

Tips & Warnings
  • UTorrent is often pronounced "You Torrent," though technically the character "u" is the Greek letter "mu." UTorrent is a lightweight bit torrent program, which often runs more efficiently using less RAM than other torrent clients.
