How to Create a Letterhead in Microsoft Word 2003

Company letterhead can be an attractive and effective type of document for a business or organization to use to show that it is a capable and professional group. Although there are companies that will create letterhead for businesses and charge to do so, attractive-looking letterhead can be created by simply using Microsoft Word 2003. By understanding how to make letterhead, you will also understand how easy it is to change the letterhead if changes need to be made in the future.

      Open up a Microsoft Word document by double-clicking on the Microsoft Word icon. Press "Ctrl+N" to open a new document. On the "View" menu at the top of the page, click on "Print Layout." Next, in the "View" menu, select "Header and Footer."

      Click "Tabs" under the "Format" menu, and click "Clear All" and "OK." If you clear the default tabs that have been preset for the header and footer, you can insert any letterhead information at a margin of 0.5 inch on the page.

      Find the "Formatting" toolbar. Choose the font size, the font color and the font type that will be included in the company letterhead.

      Press the "Tab" key two times. Enter the name of the company, press the "Tab" key again and then type in the company's phone number.

      Push the "Enter" key to move to the next line. Press the "Tab" key two times and then type in the name of the company.

      Press the "Tab" key as many times as needed for the cursor to align with the phone number. Type the fax number for the company.

      Press the "Enter" key and press "Tab" two times. Type the address of the company, including the city, state and ZIP code.

      Push the "Tab" key again as many times as needed for the cursor to align with the fax number. Then type the company's email address.

      Click "Close" on the "Header and Footer" toolbar. Go to "File" and "Save As"and save the letterhead, which is now complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the street address is long, it may be better to press the "Tab" button twice.

  • Company letterhead that includes too many graphics could be confusing and appear unprofessional.
