Fertilize each spring after all dangers of frost have passed.

Use a measuring tape to determine the diameter of the apple tree's trunk at the base.

Put protective gloves on and weigh out 1/2 lb. of fertilizer for each inch of diameter.

Distribute the fertilizer evenly on the ground under the apple tree--at least 6 inches from the base of the tree.
