To call North or South Korea from the United States, you will need to dial the US exit code, followed by the country code, then the area code and the phone number. Korean Standard Time is nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). South Korea does not observe daylight savings time.

    Calling South Korea

  1. Step 1

    Dial 001. This is the US exit code. You must dial this before making any international call.

  2. Step 2

    Dial 82. This is the country code for South Korea.

  3. Step 3

    Dial the area code. The code for Seoul is 2. The code for all cell phones is 1. Here are the area codes for other Korean cities and towns:

    Ansan - 31
    Anyang - 31
    Changwon - 55
    Cheju - 64
    Chongju - 43
    Chonju - 63
    Chonan - 41
    Chinju - 55
    Chunchon - 33
    Dangjin - 41
    Iksan - 63
    Inchon - 32

    Kunsan - 63
    Kwangju - 62
    Kwangyang - 61
    Masan - 55
    Mokpo - 61
    Pohang - 54
    Posong - 61

  4. Step 4

    Dial the 7-8 digit local phone number.

  5. Calling North Korea

  6. Step 1

    Dial 001, the US exit code.

  7. Step 2

    Dial 850. This is the country code for North Korea.

  8. Step 3

    Dial the 1-2 digit area code. The area code for Pyongyang City is 2. The area code for Hamchon is 9.

  9. Step 4

    Dial the local phone number. This should be 7 digits long.
