How to Install XP on a SATA Hard Drive

Installing Microsoft XP on a SATA drive adds an extra step into the installation process. Without understanding the correct procedure, this can be a frustration. However, by following these steps anyone will be able to install Microsoft XP on a SATA drive.

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft XP "loaner" system Microsoft XP installation CD (any version) SATA-based computer system Broadband connection Computer with a floppy drive Blank diskette

    Installing Microsoft XP on a SATA drive

  1. Step 1

    Download the Microsoft XP SATA driver from your motherboard manufacturer. Extract this driver, if necessary, and copy the driver onto a diskette.

  2. Step 2

    Insert this driver diskette into the floppy drive on the system you are going to load XP on. (Please note: If the system does not have a floppy drive, you can temporarily install one.)

  3. Step 3

    Insert the Microsoft XP Operating System Installation CD into the CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) drive and with the computer's BIOS set to "Boot from CDROM" first, power up the system.

  4. Step 4

    When prompted by the following message, "Press any key to boot from CD," press a key on the keyboard.

  5. Step 5

    Press "Enter" when prompted at the "Welcome to Setup" screen.

  6. Step 6

    Watch the bottom of the blue setup screen carefully, and when presented with the option to "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver," press the F6 key.

  7. Step 7

    Wait for a screen a screen that begins with, "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices..." and press the "S" key.

  8. Step 8

    Press "Enter."

  9. Step 9

    Choose the correct driver from the list presented, if required. Continue your installation normally.

  10. Creating an XP Installtion CD With the Drivers

  11. Step 1

    Download NLite (link provided below in the Resources section) and install it on the XP "loaner" computer with a CD burner and at least 1GB of hard disk space free.

  12. Step 2

    Download the Microsoft XP SATA driver from your motherboard manufacturer. Extract this driver, if necessary, and store it in a folder you created on the "loaner" system's hard drive.

  13. Step 3

    Load your Genuine Microsoft XP Installation CD into the CDROM drive of the computer where NLite is installed. (Please note: You will need your product key.)

  14. Step 4

    Launch NLite and click "Next."

  15. Step 5

    Click "Browse," choose the CDROM drive that contains the XP Installation CD, and NLite will prompt you to select the working folder you created on the C:\Drive. The copying process will take several minutes.

  16. Step 6

    Select "Drivers" and click "Next." NLite will ask which directory the driver is stored in. Navigate to the driver directory and press "Next."

  17. Step 7

    Click "Next" when asked, "Do you want to start the process?" Wait while your customized XP Installation CD is prepared. Depending on the speed of your CD burner, this process will take a while.

  18. Step 8

    Remove your newly created XP Installation CD from the "loaner" system and use it to install XP in the new system.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are a multitude of options that can be added or tweaked when using NLite.
