How to Create an FTP Website

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and is a fast way to transfer files between a personal computer and a server that hosts a website. An FTP website is simply one that supports FTP transfers. Creating an FTP-capable website is usually a matter of picking a plan from a web-hosting company that supplies the level of FTP transfer capabilities you desire.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a web-hosting plan that includes "FTP access" and at least one FTP account.

    • 2

Download and install a free FTP client such as FileZilla (see Resources below).

    • 3

Open FileZilla and familiarize yourself with its layout. On the top is a login bar. Directly below that is a status box that will let you know if you're connected to your FTP server. Below that are two boxes each on the left and right. The two boxes on the left display the file directories of your computer; the two boxes on the right will display the file directories of your website. Finally, on the bottom is another box that displays any current file transfers.

Log in to your FTP server using the login information provided by your host. The vast majority of the time, next to "Host," you'll type "ftp.yoursite.com," (no quote marks) and next to "Username" and "Password," you'll input the same username and password you use to access your host's control panel. Leave "Port" blank and press "Quickconnect."

Transfer files in either direction (to your computer or to your server) by clicking and dragging from one box to the other.
