How to Convert an RGB File to a CMYK File in Photoshop

Digital images used online are typically created in RGB color mode, while CMYK color mode is used for printing. When an RGB image is converted to CMYK, a color separation is created. If you edit an image that was created in RGB mode, do the editing prior to conversion.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "File" and then "Open" in Photoshop. A window will open showing the files on your computer. Locate the image file you want to convert and click its thumbnail to open it.

    • 2

Make any editing changes to the image in its original mode.

    • 3

Save a backup copy prior to converting, including all the layers.

    • 4

Flatten the layers prior to converting. To flatten, click "Layer" in the menu bar at the top of the screen, and then click "Flatten Image" in the drop-down menu that opens.

    • 5

Click "Image" in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Choose "Mode" in the drop-down menu that appears, and then check "CMYK" to change the mode. Save your converted file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before flattening the image, make sure all of the layers are visible.
