Things You'll Need:
- Aquarium, any size
- Pebbles
- Potting soil
- Rocks, different sizes
- Plants, any type
- Plexiglas
- Drill
- Tape measure
-
Step 1
Measure the top of the aquarium and purchase the correct size of Plexiglas from a hardware store or lumberyard, if the aquarium does not have a cover.
-
Step 2
Drill random holes in the Plexiglas and set aside.
-
Step 3
Place pebbles approximately 1 inch thick in the bottom of the aquarium. Spread a thin layer of potting soil on top of the pebbles.
-
Step 4
Plant desired small plants in the potting soil and pebbles. The roots need to be in the rocks and the soil pressed against the stem of the plant.
-
Step 5
Place varying sizes of clean rocks and small limbs in and around the plants to create a woodland setting.
-
Step 6
Sprinkle 1/4 to 1/2 cup water throughout the aquarium, depending on the size of the aquarium. For example, a 10-gallon aquarium will only require 1/4 cup water sprinkled throughout the soil and a 20-gallon one will need 1/2 cup of water. Place the Plexiglas cover on top of the aquarium and set in a sunny location. The sun will create the needed moisture on the inside of the aquarium for the plants. The moisture on the inside glass will continue to water the plants. If the walls turn dry, pour another 1/4 to 1/2 cup water on the soil.
