How to Install a CPU Socket 478

Socket 478 processors were introduced in 2002 with the release of the Pentium 4 processor. The name comes from the 478 pins on the processor. Installing a socket 478 processor onto a new motherboard is a delicate procedure. It must be done carefully to avoid bending any of the pins on the processor.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Work on a table with good lighting when installing a processor on a brand-new motherboard.

  2. Step 2

    Lift the retention bar next to the processor port. The processor port will look similar to the one displayed in the image.

  3. Step 3

    Pin display

    Look closely at the port for the row that is missing two holes (see image). The processor has the same design with two pins missing on one row.

  4. Step 4

    Line the processor up to the corresponding holes and carefully insert the processor into the port. Do not force it, or you will damage the processor.

  5. Step 5

    Carefully return the retention bar to its locked horizontal position. Your processor is now installed. To install the heat sink, see the link below.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always discharge any static electricity you may be holding in your body by touching exposed metal on your PC tower. Static electricity can severely damage computer components.
