How to Turn Off Windows Live OneCare
If your computer accesses the Internet or is connected to a network, it is important to implement security measures to protect your computer against viruses, malware or unauthorized access. Microsoft offers Windows Live OneCare to protect computers using a Windows operating system. Windows Live OneCare is a computer security and optimization program that offers anti-virus, firewall and performance optimization services. If you want to disable the program, you must access Windows' command application and input the following codes.

Open the "Start" menu from the Windows task bar. Select the "Run" command and type the command "CMD" into the "Open" field. Press "OK" to open the command application.

Type in the command "sc config msfwhlpr start= disabled" without the quotation marks. Input the code by typing the command rather than copying and pasting the text, since the command (CMD) application does not allow users to paste text into the application. Press "Enter" after typing the code to execute the command.

Repeat step 2 with the following codes: "sc config msfwdrv start= disabled," "sc config msfwsvc start= disabled," "sc config mpfilter start= disabled," "sc config onecaremp start= disabled" and "sc config winss start= disabled." Enter each code separately, hitting return after each to execute the command, and without the quotation marks.

Close the command application window. Click on the "Start" menu and click on the "Turn off computer" button. Select the "Restart" option to restart your computer. Windows Live OneCare will be disabled when your system reboots.

Tips & Warnings
Disabling Windows Live OneCare does not automatically cancel your subscription. Contact Microsoft to avoid additional subscription charges.
Do not leave your computer unprotected after turning Windows Live OneCare off. Without anti-virus or firewall protection, your system may be vulnerable to attacks.
