How to Use Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a tropical oil from the coconut palm. The public has had a love-hate relationship with coconut oil over the years but this once maligned material is now in the middle of a resurgence in popularity. There are no shortage of coconut oil products, but once you have bought it, what do you do with it? There are several ways to incorporate this healthy fat into your lifestyle.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace other oils or fats in recipes for coconut oil on a 1 - 1 basis. For instance, if your recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, use 1 tablespoon of coconut oil instead.

    • 2

Spread coconut oil on vegetables or toast instead of butter or jam.

    • 3

Eat it by the spoonful. This is a good way to take virgin coconut oil as a supplement, which many people consider it to be. The recommended dosage is 3 to 4 tablespoons per day.

    • 4

Gently warm the coconut oil by placing it into a bowl, and putting the bowl into a larger container of warm water. This will melt the oil. Apply to your hair 20 - 30 minutes before washing. Wash your hair as usual with shampoo. The virgin coconut oil will act as a moisturizing conditioner.

    • 5

Spread warmed virgin coconut oil on your skin as a skin conditioner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Virgin coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but it liquefies at temperatures above 76 degrees.

  • Do not use in cold salads since the oil will solidify at room temperature. Never heat virgin coconut oil in the microwave.
