How to Apply for a Substitute Teacher Certificate in Arizona

A substitute teacher in Arizona must be certified by the state. One of the requirements is an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card, which is available through the Arizona Department of Public Safety. It may take a few weeks to get this card.

      Visit Arizona's Department of Education homepage. Click on "Teacher Certification" and download the initial application for certification.

      Fill in every applicable part of the application. Some sections, such as the criminal history section, have a yes or no answer. If you do answer yes to anything in these sections, you must provide a statement of explanation with the application.

      Include a check, a cashier's check or a money order for $60. It must be made out to the Arizona Department of Education.

      Place the application, a copy of your fingerprint card, official transcripts from the university, and the payment in the same envelope. Address it to:
