In a real fighting situation you will react just as you did while you were training. If you do lots of fancy spinning kicks and twirly flips then you will do the same in a fight. However doing those things in a dojo in a controlled situation is one thing. Doing them in a street fight may get you injured or worse.

Things You'll Need:

  • Some loose fitting clothes
  • A Good mindset
  1. Step 1

Train for realism. Much of self defense is mental and in most training programs this is not emphasized enough. If you are put in an aggressive situation you must know how to react, without having to think about it. Your adrenaline will kick in and you will either take action or you will freeze. The greater stress you put on yourself in training the better your reaction will be in a real life situation.

  2. Step 2

Practice in real clothes from time to time. Generally when you are training in martial arts you practice in very loose fitting clothes such as a gi or a track suit. The problem with this is that if you are attacked on the streets you are more likely to be wearing something like jeans or even high heels. Knowing how to defend yourself when you don't have the ideal clothing is also part of real world training.

  3. Step 3

Practice with weapons. In a real world situation your attacker will likely have a weapon such as a stick, a gun or a knife. Practicing how to disarm and even use these weapons is always a good idea. You never know when these skills might save your life.
