How to Treat a Broken or Sprained Toe

A broken or sprained toe is often an injury that you can treat at home. Follow these directions in order to heal your broken toe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ice your broken toe 4 times a day for about 15 minutes. This will minimize injury swelling and relieve some of the pain of a sprained toe.

  2. Step 2

Take ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatory in order to ease the discomfort of a toe injury.

  3. Step 3

Rest your injured toe. Stay off of a sprained or broken toe as much as possible in order to allow it to heal.

  4. Step 4

Elevate your injury in order to lessen the pain of an injured toe, and also to lessen swelling.

  5. Step 5

Wear stiff soled shoes in order to provide a little extra support for a broken toe.

  6. Step 6

Tape a broken toe to the toe next to it in order to keep the injury stable and speed up recovery.

  7. Step 7

See a doctor if toe pain persists or stays sore and swollen for more than 3 weeks. There may be a severely torn ligament or broken bone fragment in your toe.
