A compost pile is one of those natural items that you find working without your assistance. Breaking down those items in your compost pile, with the help of nature, it will be readied and used again as mulch. However, that doesn't stop the sometimes ripe and overwhelming smells of compost. At points this smell is offensive and if you put your pile in the wrong place very unneighborly.

That's why you need to stop the smell of a compost pile, naturally, so you can compost and still smell the flowers. While you may not be able to kill 100% of the smell, you will cut it down substantially. Here's the steps how!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider using compost bins to actually start and mulch your compost pile. Most of the commercial bins offer lids to use to keep out animals and rain (and keep the smell in.)

  2. Step 2

If you have a compost corner in your yard, covering it with a tarp or plastic to keep the smell from wafting. This will also allow you to control how your yard looks.

  3. Step 3

Add components to your compost pile to neutralize the offensive smells. This would include ash, grass clippings and even orange and citrus fruit rinds. After a few days, you will notice a substantial difference in the smell.

  4. Step 4

Consider building a wall of dirt along side of the compost area to stop the materials composting of moving too much. Whether wind or animals, the more the items stir, the more is let into the air.
