Safely Get a Bikini Wax

Getting a bikini wax is one of the things that women do to get ready for summer swimsuit season. If you’ve never had your bikini area waxed before, it can be a daunting experience the first time so below are a few tips to help you through the experience. In this article, you will learn how to safely get a bikini wax.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

PICK A GOOD SALON OR SPA

Drop by the salon to check if it is clean before your appointment or ask for a recommendation for a reputable salon from a friend. Check out the salon’s licensing to see if they have received training on bikini waxing.

  2. Step 2

    LEARN ABOUT THE WAX

Ask what kind of wax the salon uses for their bikini waxes. Hard wax is better as it sticks the hair and not the skin. Ask if they do sugaring, which is a natural method that is gentler on the skin. Ask if the products they use are chemical free. Chemical free products are better for the skin.

  3. Step 3

    LOOK FOR CLEANLINESS

Keep an eye on the practitioner’s cleanliness by making sure they have washed and sanitized their hands. Be aware if they have double dipped into the wax – this can contaminate the wax with bacteria. Make sure they checks the temperature of the wax before applying.

  4. Step 4

EASE IRRITATION AND PREVENT INGROWN HAIRS

Use an over-the-counter antibiotic cream, 1% hydrocortisone cream, or Stridex acne wipes on the area that you’ve had waxed. This will help with irritation and prevent infections and also prevent ingrown hairs along your bikini line.

  5. Step 5

    WATCH FOR SIGNS OF INFECTION

Before to check the area that you’ve had waxed on a daily basis. Look for redness or swelling, ingrown hairs, itching or burning. Visit your doctor immediate if this happens.

Tips & Warnings
  • Schedule your wax for the week after your menstrual cycle, when you are less sensitive to pain.
  • Take an aspirin or ibuprofen 30 - 45 minutes before waxing.
  • Consult a professional before trying at home.
  • Don’t swim or lie in the sun for at least 24 hours before and after you have a bikini wax.
  • Be cautious if you’re pregnant, take birth control, hormone replacement or antibiotics. This may make you skin more sensitive to waxing.
