1
Check several salons to find one that is particularly clean and efficient. You might ask for a recommendation for a reputable salon from a friend. Check out the salon's licensing to see if staff have received training on bikini waxing.
-
2
Ask what kind of wax the salon uses. Hard wax is better because it sticks to the hair, not the skin. Ask if the salon does sugaring, which is a natural method that is gentler on the skin. Also ask for chemical-free products, which are easier on skin.

Keep an eye on the practitioner's cleanliness by making sure she washes and sanitizes her hands. Watch for double dipping into the wax -- using the same spatula throughout, re-dipping the applicator in the wax -- which can contaminate it with bacteria. Make sure she checks the temperature of the wax before applying.
-
4
Get the wax at least a few days days before of after your menstrual period. The closer you get to your period, the more sensitive your skin will be, since your immune system is compromised and infection is more likely.
-
5
Use an over-the-counter antibiotic cream, 1 percent hydrocortisone cream, or Stridex acne wipes, on the area that you've had waxed. This will help with irritation, and prevent infections and ingrown hairs along your bikini line.

Tips & Warnings
Take an aspirin or ibuprofen 30 to 45 minutes before waxing.
Consult a professional before trying at home.
Don't swim or lie in the sun for at least 24 hours before and after you have a bikini wax.
