Control Mosquitos In and Around Your Home

There are lots of things you can do to help avoid mosquito bites and control the mosquitoes in or around your home. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has offered some tips!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When possible wear long sleeves, long pants and socks while outside. This will also help protect your skin from the sun, but be careful. Don't get too hot!

  2. Step 2

Change your plans. Dawn, dusk and early evening are peak times for mosquitoes. Consider staying indoors during these times.

  3. Step 3

When you are outside during peak times, use an insect repellent containing DEET to help reduce exposure to mosquitoes.

Spray your clothes with insect repellent, too!
(but don't spray under your clothes)

  4. Step 4

At least once or twice a week, empty water from flower pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets, barrels, and cans. Mosquitoes love sitting water!

Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items that hold water, such as old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, or bottles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check with local health authorities to see if there is an organized mosquito control program in your area. If no program exists, work with your local government officials to establish a program.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics generally recommends maximum DEET concentrations of 30% for children and infants older than 2 months of age. Lower concentrations are not as long lasting, requiring more frequent reapplication.
