How to Hang a Traverse Rod

Traverse curtain rods have a pulley system that allows you to open and close draperies from the side by pulling on a string. To keep a traverse rod working smoothly and your draperies looking good, take the time to measure correctly before installing. If hung right and supported properly, a heavy-duty traverse rod can hold up to 1 1/2 to 2 pounds a foot. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window width and height to get the placement location. Decide if you want the curtains to hang inside or outside of the window. Divide the width by two to find the center of the window. Do the same for the rod to find the center.

    • 2

Mark the center measurements of the window lightly with a pencil. Place a small piece of tape on the center of the rod. Now align center of the rod with the center of the window. The height of the rod should match the length of the curtains. If you want your draperies to touch the floor and the draperies are 84 inches long, then the rod should be 84 inches from the floor. If you would like them to move easier, add another inch to allow the draperies to move more freely.

    • 3

Attach the rod with the screws that come with the rods. Install one screw half way into the wall on the left side, then repeat on the right. Check the rod to be sure it is level. Tighten the screws then add the others.

    • 4

The rod kit will have instructions on how to adjust the string and pulley system. Follow the instruction for your rod.

    • 5

Hang curtains on the brackets and test the traverse rods by opening and closing curtains several times.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a level to be sure the rods are level.

  • If draperies are heavy, use heavy-duty traverse rods to hold the weight.

  • Use a center support for rods longer than 4 feet or for heavy draperies.
