Mold on your carpet can cause health problems for family members, including pets, so you should clean it off and prevent future mold growth. Mold may be responsible for your asthma and allergy symptoms, or it may be aggravating those symptoms. Before replacing your shag carpet, try to clean the mold off and remove all of the mold spores so it does not return. How do you clean mold off of a shag carpet?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Sprinkle salt and lemon juice on the area of the shag carpet where the mold is present. You may need to move the shag fibers back and forth to get good coverage with the salt and lemon juice. Allow the lemon juice to dry before going on to the next step.

  2. Step 2

Vacuum the shag carpet thoroughly spending extra time on the areas where there is mold present so you can remove all of the mold spores.

  3. Step 3

Wet a cloth with rubbing alcohol and scrub the area where you saw the mold, working between the shag fibers. If the rubbing alcohol dries before you finish, you will need to wet the cloth with more rubbing alcohol.

  4. Step 4

Shampoo your carpet using a shampoo that contains a disinfectant or anti-fungal agent or apply such an agent immediately after shampooing.

  5. Step 5

Open your curtains and windows to allow the sun to shine on the carpets and the fresh air to blow through the room. Sunlight helps to eliminate mold and helps the carpets dry faster, as does moving air.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some natural disinfectant and anti-fungal products include Citricidal, cloves, lemon, and eucalyptus.
  • Test a hidden area of carpet with lemon juice if you are concerned about color loss and bleaching effects. Turn on fans to help carpets dry faster and inhibit new mold growth. Use a dehumidifier if your home has high humidity to help prevent mold growth.
