Things You'll Need:
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- Basin of warm water
- Paper towel
- Antiseptic cream
- Gauze
- Bandage
-
Step 1
Trim the hair around the paw to make it easier to see the pads. Be very gentle when trimming the hair to avoid extra discomfort to the dog. Remove any large pieces of debris.
-
Step 2
Soak the injured foot in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes. The warm water will loosen the skin, which may help small pieces of debris fall out on its own. Wash the foot with a mild anti-bacterial soap. Gently pat the paw dry with a paper towel.
-
Step 3
Examine all parts of the pad. Look at the bottom, sides and in between each section of the pad, searching for tiny shards of glass, stones and thorns. If you see anything sticking in the pad, pull it out with tweezers.
-
Step 4
Apply an antiseptic cream or liquid on the injured pad. PawPaw is a good cream that can be found in most pet supply stores. Put gauze over the paw and wrap it in a bandage. Change the bandage two to three times a day until the pad is completely healed.
