If your circular saw blades will not cut properly, and sharpening them does not help, they may be dirty. Fortunately, cleaning your saw blades will remedy this problem. If you have been cutting softwoods, a dirty blade is almost certainly the problem.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic bristled brush
  • Clean rags
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Bottle of cleaning solution (409 or similar mixture)
  • Marbles
  • Leather gloves
  1. Step 1

Place the marbles in the bottom of the 5-gallon bucket. You can cover the bottom of the bucket, but there should not be more than one layer. These will keep the circular saw blade from sitting directly on the bottom of the bucket.

  2. Step 2

Place your circular saw blade flat in the 5-gallon bucket. It should fit fairly snugly in the bottom of the bucket.

  3. Step 3

Pour in the entire bottle of cleaner. The solution should cover the saw blade completely.

  4. Step 4

Let the blade soak for 20 minutes. This will allow the cleaner to loosen up any gunk or residue that is stuck on the blade.

  5. Step 5

Scrub the saw blade using the plastic bristled scrub brush. It is important to use plastic bristles so that you do not scrape your blade. The dirt, grime and general gunk should come off the blade easily. Wear your leather gloves to protect your hands from the sharp blade that you are holding.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the saw blade under warm water. You can use a rag to wipe off any of the remaining cleaning fluid.

  7. Step 7

Dry off the circular saw blade using a clean, dry rag. Be very careful to get all of the moisture off the blade, and watch the sharp edges. Once you have gotten the blade completely dry, you can return it to your saw or to its storage rack.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can cover and store your cleaning bucket and the solution and reuse it for more saw blades later.
  • Be careful when handling sharp saw blades.
