How to Use a Bronchodilator
If you suffer from asthma, bronchitis or other respiratory illnesses, your doctor may prescribe a bronchodilator. A bronchodilator helps your airways to relax and open, making it easier for you to breathe. Many times, this comes in the form of a canister that fits into an inhaler. Be sure that you understand how and when to use your bronchodilator before you need to use it.

1
Shake your inhaler. If this is the first time you are using the inhaler or you haven't used it in a while, press the canister to allow one puff of medication into the air. Do not inhale this medication.
-
2
Exhale slowly. Try to blow as much air as possible out of your lungs.

3
Place the mouthpiece of the inhaler in your mouth. While pressing down on the canister, slowly inhale has deeply as you can. Remove the inhaler from your mouth. Hold your breath for five seconds.

4
Slowly exhale. Breathe slowly through your nose.

Wait a full minute in between puffs from your inhaler. Repeat if you need to take more than one puff of bronchodilator. Only take the number of puffs prescribed by your doctor.

Rinse your mouth out with plain water. This will lessen the chance that your mouth will become dry or irritated from the medication.

Tips & Warnings
Clean the mouthpiece with a soft cloth between uses. Periodically remove the canister from the inhaler and rinse the mouthpiece under running water. Dry thoroughly and replace the canister.
If you do not get relief from your bronchodilator within a few minutes, seek emergency help. If you notice that you are having to use your bronchodilator more often, call your doctor right away to let him know. Your medication may need to be adjusted.
