How to Convert VOB to MPG
VOB files are the most common type of movie file used on store-bought DVDs. If you use a DVD-ripping software, such as DVD Decrypter, to pull the files from a DVD, VOB files are the video files you will end up with on your hard drive. Media players are the only programs with the capability of reading VOB files on a computer. If you would like to use the video from a VOB file in any editing program, you must convert it into a more common file type, such as MPG.

1
Go to the Media-Convert website (see Resources). Some software programs can also do this conversion, but Media-Convert is used here because it is a free online media-file converter that can carry out many types of file conversions, including VOB to MPG.
-
2
Import your VOB video. Click on the "Browse" or "Choose File" button next to "File." Locate the file on your hard drive and click "Open" to pull it into the converter.
-
-
3
Check the "Input format" button on the upper right of the screen. Media-Convert is set up to automatically detect the file type, but if it does not recognize the file type on its own, you can select "DVD Video Object (.vob)" from the "Input format" list.
-
4
Change the "Output format." There are two different "Output format" boxes. The first one includes video presets. Select "No video preset" in this box. The second contains all of the available conversion output video options. Choose "MPEG 1 (.mpg)" from the list.
-
5
Rename the file if you want. The box to rename the file is listed under the "Advanced Settings" part of the screen. If you do not rename the file, your MPG file will be given the same name as the VOB file you imported.
-
6
Click "OK," the blue button on the right side of the screen. When you click the button, Media-Convert will begin the conversion and monitor the progress. The time it will take for Media-Convert to convert a file depends on the file size, but can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. When the conversion is done, you will be taken to a new screen with a download link. Click on the link and download the file to your computer.
