Electric tape fences are simple to install. These fences can keep your horse where you want him, or keep unwanted animals out of your lettuce. An electric tape fence can be moved to different locations to rotate grazing areas for livestock. The posts required to support these fences are lightweight and easy to install and remove. Use reflective electric tape to give high visibility to both animals and humans.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fiberglass posts
  • Post driver cap
  • Insulators and fasteners
  • Electric charger
  • Tape measure
  • T-post
  • Gate
  • Hammer
  • Ground rod
  1. Step 1
    Electric fencing tape.

Measure the area to be fenced and determine how many rows of fencing will be required. For example, an area measuring 40 by 40 feet with three rows will require 960 feet of fence tape.

  2. Step 2
    T-post with an insulator.

Mark lines on the ground, or run a string to designate the fence line. Clear away tall grass and weeds along the fence line. Install a metal T-post in each of the four corners. Position the T-post and place a post cap on top of the post. Use a large hammer (like a small sledge hammer) to pound the post into the ground. Determine where the gate will be and install a T-post away from the corner, spaced at the width of the gate.

  3. Step 3
    Fiberglass fence posts.

Drive the fiberglass posts at regular intervals along the fence lines between the T-posts. Place a post cap on top of the post and drive it into the ground. Be sure to use the post cap, as these post can be damaged from the hammer directly striking the fiberglass.

  4. Step 4

Install the insulators. Install one insulator per post for each row of electric fence tape. Fasten the insulators to the posts with non-conductive fasteners like wire ties. Only use fasteners that are recommended for your insulators.

  5. Step 5

Thread the electric fence tape through the insulators, beginning and ending at the gate posts. Some insulators have fasteners that attach to the tape. Check the manufacture's directions. Pull the tape through the insulators until it is straight and level, but not too taut.

  6. Step 6

Install the gate. Install the gate hinges and hang the gate. Remember, the gate will not be electrified; it must be tall and sturdy enough to deter animals from escaping, or in the case of a garden, keep them out.

  7. Step 7
    A fence charger.

Install the ground rod if required by the fence charger manufacturer. The manufacturer will recommend the length of the ground rod, and indicate how deep it should be driven into the ground. Fasten the ground wire from the charger to the ground rod using cable clamps. Attach the fence charger leads to each row of electric fence tape. Run electric cord to the electric outlet and turn on the charger.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the area around the electric tape fence clear of weeds and tall grass, as they will cause the fence to short out and become ineffective.
  • Use caution when running a weed eater around the base of the fence; electric fence tape is easily damaged.
