How to Clean Chrysler Outboard Motors
Cleaning a Chrysler outboard motor will keep it looking as good as new. It's all basic stuff except for one area that needs critical attention. That area, which is called the water intake, literally needs to be immaculate. If the intake plugs up or inhibits water flow through the engine, serious motor overheating problems can occur, and a staggering repair bill will likely follow. You can avoid that by keeping the outboard motor clean.
Things You'll Need
- 5-gallon bucket of water
- Bottle of biodegradable dish detergent
- Hose with nozzle
- Old toothbrush
- Soft sponge
Instructions

1
Mix your cleaning solution. With hose, fill up your bucket about halfway with water. Add 2 cups of biodegradable dish detergent. Swish it around until it's well mixed.
-
2
Wash the exterior of the motor. Dip your soft sponge into this mix and literally start washing the outboard at the top and work your way to the bottom. Dip it in often, and never let the sponge become dry. If any detergent falls on the ground, you have no environmental concerns to worry about because it's biodegradable.

3
Rinse the outboard motor off using your hose.

4
Clean out the water inlet. At the tip of the lower motor, you will find the water inlet. Dip your toothbrush into the soapy water, and then insert it as far as it will go into the water inlet. Scrub it out, and don't be afraid to use a little elbow grease on this. Dip repeatedly and scrub the tops and the sides, making sure to get any dirt or gunk that's inside.
-
5
Rinse out the water inlet. Push the tip of your hose inside of the water intake, and rinse it out completely.
-
6
Clean up. You may dispose of your detergent down any drain, and your engine will be clean. Most importantly, the water inlet will work just like new.

Tips & Warnings
Always use a biodegradable detergent for outboards. Once they are put back in the water, you won't have any worries of polluting the waterway from detergent residue that has been left on the outboard.
