A kilometer is a unit of length used in the metric system. Just as miles are used as a measurement of distance in the United States, kilometers are used in countries that employ the metric system. A square kilometer is a measurement of area. It is the mathematical result of multiplying the length and the width of an area; this is the same formula used in the decimal system. Converting metric kilometers into decimal measurements requires the use of certain mathematical formulas.

    How to Convert Square Kilometers

  1. Step 1

Convert square kilometers into square miles using multiplication. Multiply the number of square kilometers by 0.386109 for the result. This number is the equivalent of approximately 1/3 of a mile; that is, one kilometer equals approximately 1/3 of a mile.
    For example:
    20 x 0.386109 = 7.72218
20 square kilometers equals 7.72218 square miles.

  2. Step 2

Reverse the equation by using division. To convert square miles into square kilometers, divide the amount of square miles by 0.386109.

  3. Step 3

Convert square kilometers in square acres using multiplication. Multiply the amount of square kilometers by 247.105381. There are approximately 247.1 square acres in one square kilometer.
    For example:
    50 x 247.105381 = 12,355.269049999999
50 square kilometers equals 12,355.269049999999 square acres.

  4. Step 4

Reverse the equation by using division. To convert square acres into square kilometers, divide the amount of square acres by 247.105381.
