Things You'll Need:
- Window box (or boxes)
- Potting soil
- Gravel or other loose material (broken clay pots) for water drainage
- A drill for making drainage holes in the bottom of the box
- Garden gloves
- A trowel
- Plant material
- Water
-
Step 1
Assemble materials. Pre-drill holes through the bottom of the window box if needed. Scatter gravel, stones or broken clay pots over the bottom to create a drainage layer.
-
Step 2
Add a layer of potting soil over the drainage material. Arrange the plants in the box, making sure to allow ample growth space between each one. Good choices for full sun include petunias and geraniums. Sweet potato vine and vinca are trailing varieties, which do well in both sun and partial shade. Impatiens and begonias do well in partial shade and come in a variety of colors.
-
Step 3
Fill the window box with potting soil. Then, smooth out the top and gently tamp down the soil. Water the plants thoroughly and allow to drain before mounting the window box into position.
-
Step 4
Mount the window box into position. Mount using brackets and screws, which support the weight of the boxes from underneath. Mounting screws should be long enough to securely anchor the window boxes to the windowsill. Remember to water window boxes daily, or more frequently in hot climates or during drought periods.
