How to Tune a Tenor Ukulele
The sound of the tenor ukulele can carry you away to lush, tropical lands. However, it can only achieve this if it is in tune! An in-tune instrument is not only important for sounding good, but is also essential if you want to play music with others. If you have never tuned a ukulele before, don't worry! This article will show you how to use an electronic chromatic tuner to get and keep your tenor ukulele in tune.
Instructions
-
-
1
Hold your ukulele in playing position.
-
2
Turn on your tuner. Place it on your leg or another flat surface close to the instrument--so that the tuner's mic can pick up the sound of the instrument.
-
-
3
Pluck the ukulele's top string and let the note ring out.
-
4
Look at the tuner to see what note is registered by the string.
-
5
Turn the string's tuning key up if the pitch is below G, and turn the tuning key down if the pitch is above G.
-
6
Adjust the tuning key until the string's pitch reads G on the tuner. The tuner should read G and the needle should be centered showing that the pitch is neither flat nor sharp.
-
7
Repeat steps 3 through 6 for the remaining three strings; tuning them each to their respective pitches. Tune the second string to the pitch of C. Tune the third string to the pitch of E. Tune the fourth string to the pitch of A.

Tips & Warnings
If a tuner is not available, you can use a piano or pitch pipe to tune your tenor ukulele. After completing Step 7, quickly check each string again to make sure none have slipped slightly out of tune. Give your ukulele a strum to hear if it sounds in tune.
