You can make a cast iron wind bell chime from a small cast iron dinner bell and a few other bells and crystals. Add a farm-like effect with small cow bells or create a celestial feel for your wind chimes with small brass bells. Break up the bells with crystal prisms that throw light and color all around your wind bell chime.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cast iron dinner bell
  • 20 gauge craft wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Metal "S" plant hanger
  • 4 Metal bells
  • Spray polyurethane and metal spray paint
  • 4 Crystal prisms
  • Fishing line
  1. Step 1

Procure a cast iron dinner bell from you local home stores or from online retailers. Small cast iron dinner bells work better than larger cast iron farm or church bells for making wind bell chimes. Find other metal bells like small cow bells or decorative brass bells that you can hang alongside your cast iron dinner bell to make your chimes. You can find a variety of bells at online retailers or in your local home stores.

  2. Step 2

Spray the cast iron bell and the other bells with polyurethane to protect them from the elements. You can also add color with metal spray paint if you'd like to change the appearance of the bells or to make them uniform. Apply the spray paint first, let it dry and then follow with a coat of polyurethane.

  3. Step 3

Cut a 15 inch length of 20 gauge craft wire. Wrap one end around the hanger on the cast iron bell three times, and then twist it securely where the wire meets. Attach the other end of the wire to the center of the plant hanger. You will hang your wind bell chimes from the plant hanger horizontally rather than vertically as it is designed to hang a plant. After wrapping and twisting the wire, the cast iron bell should hang about 10 inches beneath the hanger. Adjust the length of wire if you prefer a shorter or longer distance.

  4. Step 4

Cut four 12 inch strands of fishing line. Tie one strand to the hanger of each of the four metal bells.

  5. Step 5

Cut four 9 inch strands of fishing line. Thread one strand through each crystal prism and knot the strand to secure the crystal.

  6. Step 6

Tie a bell onto each end of the "S" hanger. Tie a crystal in the center of each "S" curve. Tie another bell and then another crystal on either side of the cast iron bell so that they are evenly spaced along the hanger. The lines for the crystals are shorter and will create a staggered effect for your bell chimes.

  7. Step 7

Cut a 10 inch length of 20 gauge wire and wrap it around the plant hanger, beside the cast iron bell. Make a loop at the end of the wire so you can hang your bell chimes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hang small vintage tools alongside your cast iron bell to create an antique looking wind chime.
