How to Make Paper Placemats

Placemats spruce up your table for parties or everyday meals. However, purchasing new placemats for each occasion can be expensive, and you may have difficulty finding the design of your choice. You can make paper placemats for your dining table in any color or theme you desire. It's easy and quick, plus you can find supplies easily at craft or scrapbooking stores. Even children can help make paper placemats by drawing a picture on each one before it's sealed.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your paper. For each placemat you will need a piece of heavy paper, such as cardstock or poster board, measuring 11 by 17 inches. You will also need at least one piece of decorative paper, such as scrapbooking paper.

    • 2

Trim 1/4 inch off each edge of the decorative paper with a pair of decorative edge scissors. These scissors, available at craft stores, leave behind a pretty, frilled edge.

    • 3

Punch every 2 inches around the edge of the decorative paper with a scrapbooking punch. Choose a punch design to complement the season or event for which you intend to use the placemats.

    • 4

Apply a thin layer of decoupage glue to the back of the decorative paper with a foam brush. Center it on the heavy paper backing and smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles gently with your fingertips. Allow to dry for 1 hour.

    • 5

Brush a thin layer of glue over the top of the completed placemat to help protect it. Allow to dry completely before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the placemats as your seating cards as well by writing guests' names in the center. Cover the placemats in clear contact paper to make them reusable. Decoupage embellishments such as ribbon or paper cut-outs onto the completed placemat.

  • Cover your work surface to avoid getting glue on it.
