Grow Thunbergia

Most commonly referred to as "Black-eyed Susan Vine," Thunbergia is an annual flower with black centers surrounded by brightly colored petals. It grows as a vine and is perfect for climbing up trellises or used in hanging baskets and window boxes. Thunbergia is easy to grow and will bloom throughout the summer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a seed tray about 3/4 full of potting soil. A mixture of potting soil and vermiculite may be used, but regular potting soil works fine. Mist the soil to dampen. Use a tray with drain holes in the bottom for good drainage.

    • 2

Place the seeds about 1 to 2 inches apart on top of the soil. Do not push down into the soil. Cover lightly with soil; do not pack down. Mist the seeds, being careful not to disturb them. Using a spray bottle makes it easy to keep the soil damp without the seeds being disturbed.

    • 3

Place the tray in bright light either in front of a window or under grow lights. Germination takes 7 to 21 days. Set the tray outside in a sunny or partially shady location after 3 weeks. This allows the seedlings to get accustomed to the outdoors. Keep soil damp.

    • 4

Plant the seedlings in your garden area or containers after about a week. Water daily to keep moist; do not over water. Flowers will appear about 2 to 4 weeks after planting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seeds may be pre-soaked overnight to hasten germination, although this is not necessary. Begin your seeds indoors in the early spring so your seedlings will be ready to plant after the danger of the last frost has passed.
