How to Filter Spam

Spam is a dirty little four-letter word that is a big nuisance to email users on a global level. It can be considered a form of harassment, but, unfortunately, there is not a great deal you can do to eliminate it completely. However, by incorporating spam filters, you can significantly reduce the amount of spam that you receive.

Instructions

Create a "Rule" within your email program to filter spam mail. When creating the rule, indicate what subject lines, keywords and email addresses should be classified as spam mail. After creating the rule, all of the email that you receive that falls under your rule will be sent to a separate spam folder instead of your Inbox. See the Resources section for detailed information on how to set up rules in your specific email program.

Purchase and download spam filtering software on your computer, such as Spam Eater Pro and Choice Mail One. By using a spam filtering software in addition to your mail rules, you can greatly increase the amount of spam that is diverted away from your Inbox. When downloading spam filter software, be sure that it is from a source that you know and trust, in order to prevent damage to your computer.

Use an online email account such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo. These online email programs have built-in spam filters that automatically decipher what is junk mail. The spam mail is stored in a junk mail folder, which allows you to screen through the emails periodically to ensure that no legitimate emails were accidentally categorized as spam. If you receive a spam email in your Inbox that was not categorized as spam, you can manually mark it as spam and send it to the junk mail folder.
