How to Print Screen on Mac OS X Leopard

Taking a screen shot allows you to show someone else what you see on the monitor at a certain point in time. The screen shot can be saved and printed.
If you are having computer problems and want to show the error message to a technician, a screen shot is handy.

  1. Printing a Full Screen Shot

      Click on the page that you want as a screen shot. Press the "Command," "Shift" and "3" keys at the same time, and release all three keys at the same time.

      Use the mouse to click anywhere on the screen after releasing the three keys.

      Click on the desktop. A new icon will appear, named "Picture 1." This is the screen shot image that was just taken.

      Click on the icon to open the image. Press "Command" and "P" to print the screen shot.

    Printing a Partial Screen Shot

      Click on the page that you want as a partial screen shot. Press the "Command," "Shift," and "4" keys simultaneously. Release all three keys at the same time.

      Notice that the mouse cursor now changes to a "+." Drag the mouse over the portion of the page that you want to save as a screen shot.

      Find the new file on your desktop that says "Picture 2." This is the screen shot. Click on it to open. Press "Command" and "P" to print the image.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because the screen shots are named "Picture 1," "Picture 2," etc., by default , you should rename the screen shot files so they can be easily found in your computer.

  • When taking a partial screen shot, take care when dragging the mouse. If you do not drag the mouse correctly the first time, the computer will take a screen shot of what you selected and you will need to try again.
