How to Install a Multicard Reader

Installing a multicard reader can range from relatively easy to somewhat challenging, depending on whether it is an internal card reader meant for a desktop computer, or an external one designed for either a desktop or a notebook computer. Both types of installation will be covered here.

Instructions

  1. Internal Multicard Reader

    • 1

Remove computer case side panel(s) by unscrewing the Phillips head screws, and sliding the side toward the rear. Make sure the computer is fully powered down and the AC power cord is removed.

    • 2

Take out the drive expansion bay blank-off and the metal stiffening blank using a pair of pliers. Installing a multicard reader for a 3.5-inch bay into a 5.25-inch drive bay will require an adapter bracket.

    • 3

Slide the multicard reader into the drive bay from the front.

    • 4

Secure the multicard reader using the Phillips head screws provided.
(Retention screws typically can be used only on one side.)

    • 5

Connect the reader's data cable to the appropriate socket on the motherboard with the cable provided. Some multicard readers will require a second power connector be plugged in. If so, identify the correct power supply feed and connect. Consult the motherboard manual if you're unsure which socket to plug the card reader into.

    • 6

Replace the side panel, and secure it with the screws.

    • 7

Power up the system. The "New Hardware Found" dialog box will disappear. If prompted, insert the CD that was provided by the multicard reader's manufacturer, and click "OK."

    Installing an External Multicard Reader

    • 8

Insert the multicard reader's USB plug into an open jack. In this instance, the system can be left powered up.

    • 9

Wait for the "New Hardware Found" dialog box to appear. In most installations the box will disappear without user intervention.

    • 10

Insert the CD that was provided by the multicard reader's manufacturer, and click "OK."

    • 11

Remove the external card reader, and reboot. Plug in the multicard reader, and test to ensure proper operation.

Tips & Warnings

  • All cables should be disconnected before installation.

  • Always unplug the USB card reader from the notebook or laptop before packing it away for travel. These plugs can be sheared off.
