How to Remove Residential Window Film
Window film provides heat protection by either blocking heat or providing another layer of insulation for windows. Window film is often tinted for heat retention or reflection, and for privacy. Various products are commercially available to install window film and to cure it to the glass. Products to remove window film are commercially available for replacing or upgrading the window covering or for customizing the appearance of a home. Things You'll Need
- Spray bottle
- Ammonia
- Plastic wrap
- Razor blades (preferably with a good scraper handle)
- Cleaning rag or newspaper
- Water
- Sponge
- Glass cleaner
- Lint-free cloth
- Optional: mask, safety glasses, latex gloves, long-sleeved shirt

Pour the ammonia in the sprayer bottle and liberally spray the glass with the window film (apply several coats).

Cover the window pane with plastic wrap to seal the ammonia and let it soak into the window film. Wait at least 45 minutes.

Check the window film to see whether it has softened. If needed, apply another liberal coating of ammonia and wrap the window again. Wait until the film has softened.

Scrape the window film from the glass using the razor blade. Wipe the excess window film from the razor blade using the cleaning rag or newspaper. If needed, change the razor blade (depending on the amount of film to be scraped off).

Spray any remaining film or residue with ammonia and scrape softened pieces from the glass. Rinse the window with water until clear. Dry the window thoroughly and clean with window cleaner.

Ammonia is an irritant so wear protective glasses, gloves and a mask to minimize contact. Make sure your area is well-ventilated.
