How to Slimjim a Car
A slim jim is a device used to unlock a vehicle door when you accidentally lock yourself out. It typically is used by a locksmith or the police department; however, there is nothing illegal or immoral about owning a slim jim if you use it only on your own vehicle. Using a slim jim can be tricky. If you are not familiar with all of the components inside your door (side airbags, etc.), you can cause damage if you're not careful.

1
Place the slim jim between the weatherstripping and the window glass on the front passenger's door, hook side down. You may have as little as a quarter inch to work with, as most cars made after 1992 have complicated components such as electric window and mirror modules located behind the door.
-
2
Move the tool back and forth along the opening until you sense it touching the locking mechanism, known as a "lock rod." The slim jim must "grab" onto this rod.

3
The way to flip the lock mechanism depends on the make and model of your vehicle. You may need to pull up on the slim jim or push it to the left or right. When you hear a "click," the lock has been flipped and your door is unlocked.

Tips & Warnings
Don't slim jim the driver's side door, especially if you are a novice. That side typically contains more electronic components, which are easily damaged.
