Things You'll Need:
- fish tank
- filter
- PH strips
-
Step 1
Do not use a little fish bowl for your pet. Buy them a real tank. goldfish thrive in an area that has room for them to move and grow.
-
Step 2
Make sure you always have a fish filter running. Goldfish can produce a lot of waste. This will raise the level of ammonia in the tank and can be very unhealthy if left unclean. So keep the filter running and change it often.
-
Step 3
Use florescent lighting. This will save on electricity and will produce less heat.
-
Step 4
You want to check the PH level before adding fish to the tank. goldfish do best between 7.2-7.6 PH. You can either bring a cup of water to your local pet store or buy some PH strips and check it yourself.
-
Step 5
When changing water in the tank there are a few things to keep in mind. About every 2 weeks you should use a siphon and try to get as much of the waste that you can out of the tank. you generally only want to remove about 1/4-1/2 of the tank water on each change. Now to replace the water, you want to use tap water that has been sitting for at least 24 hours. this will help to remove a lot of the ammonia in the water.

Step 6
Use prepackaged food when it comes feeding time. Remember it is better to feed your fish several small meals a day then just one big one. You only want to give them so much food that they can eat the majority of within 5 minutes. Any more is excess.
