A clicker is a dog training device that makes a sharp clicking sound when you press it. When you pair the sound with a treat--you have a very powerful training aid. The sound of the clicker becomes a communication tool that you can use to effectively train your dog. Here is how to use a clicker to train your dog to come when called.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  1. Step 1

Pair the sound of the clicker with the food. This is done by clicking and then immediately giving your dog a treat. This is done over and over until your dog thinks of the treat when he hears the sound of the clicker.

  2. Step 2

Now you can use it to teach your dog to come when called. If you are in the house you can kneel down on the ground and in an excited voice call your dog to you. The second your dog gets to you, click and give the treat.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the exercise a few times. Call your dog, wait until your dog gets to you, and then click. The clicker lets your dog know when she has properly completed the command.

  4. Step 4

Once your dog can do it in the house, try it outside. It's important that when you practice this outside, make sure it is done in a safe place or with a long leash on your dog. You have to make sure that your dog does not take off on you.

  5. Step 5

The clicker can be used to teach your dog any command. Once you've taught your dog the "Come" command you can move on to "Sit," "Down," 'Stand," "Stay" and "Heel."

Tips & Warnings
  • Spend time teaching your dog the sound of the clicker.
  • Train in short, 10-minute sessions.
  • Use treats that your dog really loves.
  • Never train when you are stressed or tired.
