Things You'll Need:
- 1 can of Lemon Lime Soda
- 1 4lb chicken
- Barbeque Rub Sauce-
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 1/4 cup paprika (or hot paprika for an extra kick!)
- 2 tablespoons of black pepper
- 2 tablespoons of salt
- 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons of onion powder
- 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
-
Step 1
First make the Barbecue rub. Mix all of the dry ingredients together. You can store the remaining rub in a jar for up to 6 months!
-
Step 2
Pop the tab off of the soda. Try and make a few more holes on top of the can by using the old fashioned can openers with the triangular tip. Pour out half of the soda into the wood chips if using that type of cooking method. If using coals, place a large drip pan in the center . If using a gas grill, place the wood chips or chunks into the smoker box. (I recommend using wood chips to give it a smokier flavor, yum!)Preheat your grill on high until you see smoke.
-
Step 3
Clean your chicken thoroughly and dry with paper towels. Sprinkle about 2 teaspoons of your rub on the chicken. Take 2 more teaspoons of the rub and put it into the holes on your can. It is okay if it foams up, it is normal.
-
Step 4
Insert the soda can into the body cavity of the chicken and spread out the legs to form a tripod. Tuck the sing tips behind the chicken's back.
-
Step 5
If you want to add wood chips to give it a smokier taste you can do so but you don't have to.
If using a charcoal grill, toss the wood chips on the coals. Stand the chicken up into the center over the drip pan and away from the heat. Cover the grill and cook until the skin is a dark golden brown and crisp. It should be about 180 degrees F. Takes about 1 1/2 hours. If using charcoal grill, add 12 fresh coals after the first hour. -
Step 6
Use tongs and carefully transfer chicken in its upright position on the soda can to a platter and present it to your guests. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
