Green carpet cleaning can work wonders

Green carpet cleaning makes the whole house seem fresh, and helps reduce the toxin load on the family and planet. From budget homemade green carpet cleaning to the latest high tech green carpet cleaning devices, this eHow article shows how you can choose and use the ones you like the best to have green carpet cleaning in your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the least expensive homemade green carpet cleaning method. Baking soda and salt do excellent green carpet cleaning on their own. Sprinkle one part table salt and one part baking soda on the carpet, and vacuum after waiting a minimum of 15 minutes. Add a drop of lemon essential oil (sold at natural food stores) for every two cups of baking soda and salt, and you’ll have a pleasant smelling green carpet cleaning germ killer that’s even powerful enough to use in hospitals that will last for a while even after the carpet has been vacuumed. Just be sure it’s real essential oil (not just lemon scented culinary oil) to get the germ-fighting effects, and make sure you shake and disperse it well within your soda/salt mixture because any clumps of the oil may lighten your carpet. You can even shake your mixture then remove any clumps before using.

  2. Step 2

Fight bad bugs with good bugs. Science insists that the earth is teeming with micro organisms and life couldn’t exist without them. But that ideally, 90 to 98% are beneficial, and the only problem comes when the bad ones start to grow out of balance from the good ones. That’s the theory behind both beneficial bacteria and live enzyme green carpet cleaning products. Mistermax and Nature’s Miracle use either enzymes or both enzymes and beneficial bacteria to remove stains and odor. Read and follow their directions – in most cases, you’ll simply apply the specified amount, allow it to sit for a described amount of time, and vacuum.

  3. Step 3

Purchase or rent a home steam carpet cleaner. Professional steam carpet cleaners who come to your house to do the job for you sometimes use chemicals along with the steam – so if hiring one, be sure to check to see if they only use green carpet cleaning ingredients. But you can buy or rent your own and use merely water as a wonderful green carpet cleaning method. The heat, quick moisture, and suction often do an excellent job. In fact, one custodian even reported that hot water was his favorite cleaning solution – green or not. If you want to boost it even further, add one part white vinegar to ten parts water for a great green carpet cleaning solution to put into your steamer. People who use this say it removes stains very well. Just be prepared for the vinegar scent to linger until the carpet is completely dry.

  4. Step 4

Go high tech with an ultraviolet germ killing vacuum. There’s nothing like the light of the sun to rebalance and destroy pathogens. Science even says that certain contaminated water would be safe after a long enough period in the sunlight. But how do you use it for green carpet cleaning? You could certainly toss throw rugs outdoors in the sun for a few hours. But for carpets, some companies are now harnessing ultra violet light that shines onto the carpet to instantly kill germs, dust mights, mold, etc. Oreck Halo is one brand you can check out, but always research and compare with other brands.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test your rug or carpet first. For green carpet cleaning – or any type of carpet cleaning – it’s always good to test an inconspicuous area of the rug with the method you choose to use before applying or using it on the entire carpet. Different carpet ages and different fibers reaction in unpredictable ways.
