Shampoo your child's hair with RID head lice shampoo. You can try other brands if you wish but I know the RID to be effective. RID head lice shampoo does not just treat and kill head lice, it also serves to protect you from head lice. You may wish to repeat this procedure once a month or so and especially after the school reports and active cases of head lice.

Talk to your child about head lice. Tell them what it is, how it is contracted and what they can do to prevent getting it. Things they can do is avoid sharing combs, brushes and hats with other children. It must be understood that getting head lice does NOT mean you are dirty or gross. Head lice does not discriminate. If you have unprotected hair, they will take up house if given the chance. This may also help your children so that they don't judge other children harshly when they get head lice.

    • 3

Purchase your child a special hat & comb that they can take to school to avoid their temptation to use combs belonging to other children. Since you have had the discussion with your child about the risk of getting head lice by sharing combs and hats, they should know not to share theirs with other children. Be sure their hat is unique so no mistaken identities happen.

Let your child decorate their comb with some simple glitter glue or fancy marker like metallic markers. This will make it even more special. For some children, this can decrease the odds that they will share it with other children.

If your child is in elementary school, suggest to their teacher that each child should be provided with a comb. Better yet, why not purchase a container of combs and donate to your child's class. Maybe suggest to the teacher that they have a comb decorating art project to go along with a head lice discussion.

...by a product called 'Robi-Comb', which is a small comb that beeps and then electrocutes any live lice it finds. You still have to remove nits, but it's nice to have something to check out any little itchiness, if you're paranoid like me. It only takes one louse and a few days to turn into a lice pandemic- they lay eggs like crazy. Thanks for the article. It seems like lice shows up in schools the most often after summer break, so it's good to remember to watch out for it.
