Step 1
Wall shelfs are a good way to display your nic nacs and is a good way to decorate an empty wall.It is easy to go and buy a shelf at a store, but you can also make them.Below I will explain how to build a wood wall shelf. The tools you will need is a jig saw with blade, tape measure, electric hand sander, hammer, medium grit wood sand paper for electric sander, clear goggles for eye protection, straight edge, wood glue,1 1/2 inch finish nails,a pencil and the wood.
-
Step 2
You can get the wood at your local lumber yard or if you have it at home.Pine and or poplar are both good to work with. Some of the other tools, the lumber yard may have too.Once you have all the tools ready.Lets get started.
-
Step 3
First you measure how wide and long you want your shelf to be,using the tape measure. After you fugured out what the measurements are,you measure out those measurements on the wood that is going to be the shelf.Mark those mesurments with a pencil on the woood and then get your straight edge and connect the dots. You need a work table to cut the wood on.
-
Step 4
Once you connected the dots. You cut on the lines with the jig saw. Before you cut the wood put clear goggles on for safety.Plug the saw in,Line the jig saw blade up with the outside of the line you made on the wood and press the saw trigger in.You may need to push the saw a little to cut through the wood and stay focused cutting on the line.
-
Step 5
After the base of your shelf is cut out.The next thing to measure and cut is the part where the screws go into the wall to hold the shelf up.This piece will be glued and nailed under the back of the base shelf. This piece is usually 1 inch to 2 inches wide and the length of your shelf.Make these marks on the piece of wood for your shelf and again connect the dots. Then cut on the lines.
-
Step 6
There are also two stabilizer pieces to put on each side of the shelf for stability.Usually these pieces are tringle shaped or close to it.Mark out a couple of good sized triangle which should be the same width as the top base then cut the pieces out.Now that all the pieces are cut.You need to sand each piece until each piece is smooth and then put each piece together.
-
Step 7
Connecting the pieces,The first piece to connect is the part where the screws connect to the wall.Get your wood glue and apply a little glue underneath on the back of the base shelf and on the top part of the anchor piece. The lay the back of the base shelf and on the other piece, line them up and get your hammer and finish nails and nail 3 nails,1 on 1 side, middle and the other side.Once the piece are nailed together you might have some glue dripping.Wipe the glue up with a wet rag.
-
Step 8
Now to connect the side stabilizer pieces.Get those pieces and wood glue apply some wood glue to the top of 1 of the side pieces and that bottom of the side of the shelf where the side piece is going to connect. Then connect them and get your hammer and finish nails nail 2 nails 1 in the top front of the base shelf into the top of the side piece and nail 1 nail into the top back of the base shelf into the top back of the side piece.Repeat this step for the other side too.
-
Step 9
To finish this up you countersinc all the nails with a hammer and a nail countersinc tool.Put the countersinc tool tip on the nail heads you nailed into the shelf and tap the end of the countersinc with the hammer to tap the nail into the nail hole more and then apply some wood filler in the nail holes, wait until the wood filler dries then sand and paint your shelf.
