Things You'll Need:
- Lined paper
- Pen and/or pencil
- A little bit of time
- Topic for the paper
-
Step 1
The first step is to determine a topic. Try to be specific but not extremely narrow. This topic should be something you are interested in and know a little bit about or have done some research on. Then, forming an outline and a bubble or flow-chart can help the writer visualize the layout of the paper and help with organization. The writer should create a thesis statement to clearly state the main point and topic of the paper.
-
Step 2
After creating the outline, use each main point in the outline to formulate topic sentences. Three topic sentences should clearly make individual points for each of the three paragraphs of the body. Write the body first, then move to the conclusion and sum up the main points and clearly state what the audience should take from the paper.
-
Step 3
Last, write the introduction with a really good hook and the thesis as the final sentence of your intro. After creating your rough draft, go through the paper and see where you should put any quotes or paraphrasing to strengthen the argument or points. Rewrite, move sentences around and do any rephrasing to smooth the flow. Be sure to spell check and check punctuation.
-
Step 4
When finished, the paper should have five complete paragraphs. A paragraph is generally 5-7 sentences. The structure of the paper should be very strong and each point should relate to the others and support the thesis.
