How to Read a Dual Layer DVD

Dual layer DVDs use an optical layering technology to allow up to two times the amount of data to be recorded on a single side of a DVD than previously possible. This dual layering technology, however, requires a drive that is capable of reading the disc media. Reading a dual layer DVD is a basic computer task which all users can perform and should be familiar with.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dual layer capable DVD drive
  1. Step 1

    Insert your DVD media into the DVD drive.

  2. Step 2

    Wait a few seconds while the disc is recognized by the computer.

  3. Step 3

    Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the drive.

  4. Step 4

    Double-click the drive icon and review the data contained on the drive.

  5. Step 5

    Utilize the data on the dual layer disc as your would any other disc media.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dual layer DVDs are much more expensive than their single layer counterparts, as such, it will cost more to replace them if the need arises.
  • Always make sure you touch the disc by the edges as touching the read side of the disc may cause oils and debris to prevent the disc from being readable.
