Sub shops are convenient for people who are on their lunch breaks and need a place to eat quickly. Unlike fast food places, sub shops often provide customers with a healthy meal choice. If you are considering opening a sub shop in your area, but do not have the start-up funds needed, create a business plan and present it to the bank for a small business loan.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Restaurant equipment
  • Restaurant supplies
  • Business license
  • Fire inspection certificate
  • Health inspection certificate
  1. Step 1

Select a location. The location of a restaurant is crucial to the success of the business. Rent, lease or buy a store front in a densely populated area or surrounded by other stores or offices since sub shops are popular with business people who are seeking a fast, but healthy, lunch.

  2. Step 2

Complete paperwork. Before opening the sub shop, you will need to acquire a business license from the local court house and safety inspections performed by the local fire chief and the health inspector. The fire chief will tell you how many people your restaurant can safely hold and the health inspector will give you a certificate to allow you to serve food to the public. All three certificates should be publicly posted.

  3. Step 3

Order equipment and supplies. Order the restaurant equipment necessary for sandwich making. For fast sandwich preparation, a crucial piece of equipment is a refrigerated sandwich table, which features divided compartments in which to hold ingredients such as meat and cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions.
In addition to the restaurant equipment, you will also need to purchase tables, chairs and other serving items needed to provide customers with a convenient sub sandwich order.

  4. Step 4

Hire employees. When starting a new business, you should be prepared to do a lot of the work yourself. To effectively train new employees, you need to know how to properly work and clean the equipment, take and fill orders as well as do the paperwork. However, you will need employees to help during the busy times of the day. No matter if you hire family members, friends or someone who filled out an application for employment, you will need to become familiar with employee rules, regulations and payroll.

  5. Step 5

Bring people in. To introduce the neighborhood to your new sub shop, you will need to attract people. Place advertisements in the local newspaper and radio, pass out fliers and send a menu to local businesses. For a grand opening, plan a celebration offering free samples of featured sandwiches or free drinks with a purchase of a meal.

  6. Step 6

Co-exist peacefully. It is possible for two sub sandwich shops to be in business in the same area, no matter if they are popular restaurant chains or another local owner. Be in competition with prices and service. It is crucial to offer something to your customers that your competition does not have such as catering, outdoor eating or live music.
