How to Write Subscripts in Microsoft Word 2007

Subscripts must be used when writing chemical formulas and mathematical equations to ensure that you communicate the formula or equation accurately. Writing subscripts is easily done in Microsoft Word 2007, which offers many text formatting options. Word 2007 lets you easily customize any text, and placing subscripts throughout the text is one method. All you have to do is type your text and use one of Word's many formatting tools to turn it into a subscript.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Type the text.

  2. Step 2

    Highlight the text that needs to be a subscript.

  3. Step 3

    Right click on the text and select "Font."

  4. Step 4

    Check the box next to "Subscript" in the "Effects" section of the "Font" box that opens up.

  5. Step 5

    Click "OK."

Tips & Warnings
  • A subscript icon is available on the "Font" section of the "Home" tab. The icon shows an "x" with a subscript "2."
