How to Adopt a Star

Adopting a star has become an easy, popular thing to do. Much like adopting a highway, a person pays a fee to "adopt" a star of their own. For the fee, the person receives star charts to help them find their star and a description of the star they've adopted. An adopted star is often given as a gift or a way to remember a loved one.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local planetarium to find out about stars that can be adopted by the public. You also could look online, as star adoption registries are common on the Internet.

    • 2

Complete the necessary paperwork and pay the fee. Information such as your name, address and who or what the adopted star is being named for are typical requirements.
There are often a variety of stars to choose from, and different stars require different fees. Typically, the larger the magnitude of the star, the more expensive it is to adopt.
The length of the process depends on how many other star adoptions are waiting to go through and whether you're doing it in person or via the Internet.

    • 3

Receive a map to your star and photographs of it. Many packages also include bonuses, such as facts about star gazing. If you adopted a star through a planetarium, there also might be a discount associated with visits to the institution.
