Go to local police office and ask the receptionist if you can view your criminal record, which include jail records. In some cases they may allow you to directly see them. In some areas they may require you to fill out a form and pay a small fee. If you are looking for jail records someone else other then yourself or you'd like to use an online service, continue to Step 2.

Go to the Intelius website to look for the person you want to find the jail record for (see Resources). Type in the first and last name and the state of the person you are searching for. Click on the Search button and then a list of people with that name in the state you listed will show up. Click on the View Detail button to see if it's the person you are looking for.

Click on the option for the background report that will include all of the people with the name you searched for in the town or city of the name you clicked on. You will have to add the feature to a cart to pay for the background check. If you would like to try another site to search for the person and their jail records before purchasing this background check, continue to Step 4.

Go to the Family Watchdog website (see Resources). On this website you can either search by name and state like you did previously, or you can enter the street, city, state, and ZIP code. This time, try searching by location rather than name. Fill out all the information and click on the Search button.

Choose from the map of registered offenders to find the person near you or person you are searching for. You can now view if they are a registered sex offender with more detailed information. Also, for a cheaper price that the previous website, you can run a background check.
