Shimano is a fishing tackle company specializing in high-end rods and reels. The company's fishing rods are noted for their responsiveness, thoughtful engineering to maximize the control an angler has over a hooked fish, and multiple adjustment points to increase comfort, balance and casting accuracy. Different Shimano rods offer different features and strengths.
A Shimano rod designed for surfcasting will have markedly different properties from a Shimano rod built for freshwater baitcasting for largemouth bass. In fact, Shimano offers rods rated at more than three dozen different action ratings, from flyfishing to heavy surfcasting and offshore saltwater fishing. The company's broad product line does have certain common adjustment features which are designed to enhance the fishing experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Adjust the "Slide-N-Grip" reel seat by clicking the indexed foregrip to tighten the fishing reel to the rod at the preferred spot along the grip. This adjusts the rod so the angler only holds the soft cork grip, rather than the hard plastic or steel reel seat, creating a more comfortable hold on the rod for prolonged fishing. The grip adjustment also helps balance the rod in the angler's hands, depending on reel placement.

  2. Step 2

Make ultra-fine adjustments to the reel positioning by turning the locking wheels clockwise on the two hoods on the reel seat.

  3. Step 3

Change the rod balance in the grip by adjusting the counter-balance weight system at the butt of the rod. Unscrew the balance weight at the butt section and adjust by removing or adding weights to shift the balance of your rod to suit your grip preferences and the location of the reel. A properly balanced rod will cradle in your open hands at the grip without tipping up or down.

  4. Step 4

Check the line guides before and after each fishing trip to ensure all guides are perpendicular to the rod. Adjust the guides by gently bending forward or backward.
