How to Stop 800 Numbers From Calling

Unwanted calls from 800 numbers can be distracting, time consuming and potentially harassing. The federal government has stepped in to give consumers a choice as to whether they want to receive these phone calls in the future.

The federal government set up a Do Not Call List in 2003; it was revised in 2007 and became a law in 2008. Solicitors or 800 numbers are not supposed to contact anyone whose number has been on the list for at least 31 days.

The Do Not Call List is also known as the National Do Not Call Registry.

Instructions

Place your number on the government's Do Not Call List. You can do this by visiting the National Do Not Call List website, which is included in the References section at the end of this article.

Click on 'Register Now'. You can enter up to three numbers at a time. You also will need to include and verify your email address so you can receive confirmation that the numbers were placed on the Do Not Call List.

The law states that telemarketers cannot call numbers after they have been on the list for at least 31 days. You may still receive unwanted phone calls from 800 numbers until the 31-day requirement is met.

Verify your registration with the confirmation email. If you do not receive an email, revisit the Do Not Call List website and select ' Verify a Registration'. An email will be resent to confirm the listing.

File a complaint with the government if, after 31 days, you continue to receive phone calls from an 800 number or a telemarketer. Click on 'File a Complaint' on the Do Not Call List website.

You will need the date of the call and the name or number of the business or organization that called. The 'File a Complaint' page includes a list of organizations that are allowed to call numbers even if they appear on the Do Not Call List.

Tips & Warnings

  • You no longer need to re-register a telephone number. As of 2008, numbers placed on the list are permanent.
